It’s Who We Are.

Families Helping Families of Southeast Louisiana is a member of the Families Helping Families network. The staff at each center typically has someone in their life that they love dearly that has a disability or is an individual with a disability. Because we “walk the walk” we can “talk the talk”. Hurricane Katrina has changed our lives forever and the need to have a center for the three parishes most affected was realized immediately after the storm. We are looking forward to helping families recreate their lives by making them aware of the services that are available to help them survive in our post-Katrina environment.

It’s What We Do.

Families Helping Families of Southeast Louisiana is an initiative of the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council . In accordance with Act 378 of 1989 we work to help families find the services they need in order to remain in their community. We provide information and referral, education and training and peer-to-peer support.

It is about helping families stay together, independent and striving to reach their full potential. It is what we want for our families and for yours. It’s also about getting an appropriate education for our children with disabilities. An important aspect of our work is educating our policymakers about the services that families need through the grassroots effort of LaCAN (signup for LaCAN updates). The center will be able to assist families through contracts with the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council , Metropolitan Human Services District, the State Department of Education, Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center , formerly known as Project PROMPT , the Louisiana State Improvement Grant and other local initiatives designed to assist individuals with disabilities. Through the efforts of LaDisability Talk families can get up-to-date information on disability issues.
